Make Way - For Differentiation
As differences emerge in relationships we can feel like we are being pulled in different directions. We are pulled to be our own person and pulled to stay in the relationship. Differentiation adds value to your relationship as it allows you to do both.
Self-differentiation is the ability to identify and express important parts of ourselves. Other-differentiation is the ability to be curious about our partner while managing our own emotional reactions.
The negative impact of not differentiating due to fear or maybe arrogance often leads to a stalemate and the charge of the relationship dies.
The positive impact of differentiation due to consciously staying curious and responding authentically with vulnerability, allows us and our partner to show up as our best selves.
We all have our foibles and if we are truthful there are things that we don’t like about one another at times. Differentiation enables us to stay emotionally and physically committed to one another and resolve conflicts. It’s about getting curious not furious.
