Make Way - For Self Soothing
The new year is well underway and we have not taken the time to connect via our blog. We send this encouragement now out of gratefulness and joy that we are alive and well. Yes, we are connecting in other ways but we want to encourage you via this conversation too. Interestingly, in order for us to get off the treadmill of activity and write this blog, we needed to pause and remind ourselves what else is important to us.
This conundrum is probably very familiar as it impacts our everyday life. Everyone’s daily experience involves essentially prioritising what is important to us. We can become very practical and just do the essentials as they present themselves to feel more in control of our messy lives. Or we can pause and consciously choose what is important and how we will manage to balance the many things that add meaning and value to us personally and helps us to interact with others.
Presently the world is very unsettled and the future unknown. This is understandably distressing and adds to the chaos of life. While not denying these unsettling world events and the effect on us all, we still need to do what ever it is that the helps us to manage our individual mental health and to support others by checking in re what they need.
We are holistic beings and we need to consciously check our emotional, mental, physical, social and spiritual state. We need to prioritise and manage the state that we are in or get professional help if we are not functioning well enough. We are social beings and we need to check in with one another, without denying the distress, we also need to acknowledge the things that we can be grateful for…including one another.
Remember that the object is to calm down. Breathe! Slow deliberate box breathing, inhale for four, hold for four then out for four. This sends a message to our brains to settle down. Lean into your senses. A cold compress, a sweet smelling hand cream, the taste of a sweet strawberry, the colour of a flower or the sound of humming can also provide relief and soothe us. Whatever is around you is a potential gift to soothe you and those that you are with.
